Refugee Education and Learning International

Join us for an enlightening brown bag lunch presentation on Friday, March 13th, at 11:30 a.m., in the Vista Room of the Hillside Complex at Rossmoor. Our guest speakers will be Dr. Cecelia Wambach and Dr. Carolie Sly of Refugee Education and Learning International

Refugee Education and Learning International (REAL) is a nonprofit organization established in 2017, initially formed to provide education to refugee children and youth stranded on the Greek island of Lesvos following the EU's border closure in 2016. REAL began with volunteer educators teaching various subjects, including math, science, English, and later expanded to include a Girls Empowerment Program offering swimming and biking lessons. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, REAL developed a Virtual Learning Program in 2020, enabling volunteer educators to teach English online to students across multiple countries.

REAL also launched a Scholarship Fund in 2021 to support talented and promising students facing difficulties continuing their education. Most recently, in 2023, the organization began offering virtual teaching to girls and young women in Afghanistan with an enrollment of 13 teachers and 24 students in their Virtual Teaching Program by 2025. REAL continues its mission to empower refugees through education, skill-building, and providing opportunities for personal growth.
